Wishart Spence

Wishart Spence, born on March ninth, nineteen oh four, in Toronto, Ontario, was a distinguished puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. He was the son of James Houston Spence and Margaret Hackland, and he began his academic journey at the University of Toronto Schools. In nineteen twenty-five, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Toronto, followed by a remarkable legal education at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class, receiving the gold medal.

After being called to the Ontario Bar in nineteen twenty-eight, Spence furthered his studies by obtaining a Masters of Law from Harvard Law School in nineteen twenty-nine. He practiced law in Toronto and also served as a part-time lecturer at Osgoode Hall, sharing his expertise with aspiring lawyers. His judicial career began in nineteen fifty when he was appointed to the High Court of Justice of Ontario, marking the start of a significant contribution to Canadian law.

On May thirtieth, nineteen sixty-three, Spence ascended to the Supreme Court of Canada. He played a pivotal role in high-profile cases, particularly in the realm of civil liberties, often aligning with Chief Justice Bora Laskin and Justice Brian Dickson, a trio informally known as 'LSD'. In nineteen sixty-six, he chaired the royal commission investigating the Munsinger Affair, where he criticized the handling of the situation by the Diefenbaker government but found no evidence of criminal activity.

Spence's tenure on the Supreme Court concluded with his retirement on December twenty-ninth, nineteen seventy-eight. His contributions to Canadian society were recognized in nineteen seventy-nine when he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada. Wishart Spence passed away on April sixteenth, nineteen ninety-eight, at the age of ninety-four, leaving behind a legacy of legal excellence and commitment to justice.
