Witmer Stone

Witmer Stone, born on September twenty-second, eighteen sixty-six, was a distinguished American ornithologist, botanist, and mammalogist. His remarkable career spanned over fifty-one years at the Ornithology Department of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, where he held various positions, including Director from nineteen twenty-five to nineteen twenty-eight.

A founding member of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club established in eighteen ninety, Stone played a pivotal role in the ornithological community. He was instrumental in launching their periodical, Cassinia, and served as the editor of The Auk, the American Ornithologists' Union's periodical, from nineteen twelve to nineteen thirty-six. His leadership extended to serving as president of the organization from nineteen twenty to nineteen twenty-three.

Stone's contributions to science were extensive, as he published numerous books and hundreds of articles focusing on birds, flora, and mammals, particularly in Eastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey. His dedication to the field earned him membership in various scientific societies, including the presidency of the American Society of Mammalogists and the Pennsylvania Audubon Society.

In recognition of his significant impact on ornithology, the Witmer Stone Wildlife Sanctuary in Cape May Point, New Jersey, was established in nineteen thirty-five by the National Audubon Society in his honor. Posthumously, he was awarded the Brewster Medal by the American Ornithologists' Union in nineteen thirty-nine, solidifying his legacy in the scientific community.
