Wolfgang Köhler

Wolfgang Köhler, born on January twenty-first, eighteen eighty-seven, was a prominent German psychologist and philosopher known for his significant contributions to Gestalt psychology. Alongside notable figures such as Max Wertheimer and Kurt Koffka, Köhler played a crucial role in shaping this influential psychological movement, which emphasized the holistic nature of perception and cognition.

During the tumultuous years of the Nazi regime in Germany, Köhler stood firm against the injustices faced by Jewish professors, vocally protesting their dismissal from universities and the imposition of Nazi salutes in academic settings. His commitment to ethical principles and academic integrity led him to leave Germany in nineteen thirty-five.

Upon relocating to the United States, Köhler accepted a professorship at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he dedicated the next two decades to teaching and research. His work continued to influence the field of psychology, and a survey published in two thousand two recognized him as the fiftieth most cited psychologist of the twentieth century.
