Wolfgang Schäuble

Wolfgang Schäuble, born on September eighteenth, nineteen forty-two, in Freiburg im Breisgau, is a distinguished German jurist and politician whose career has spanned over five decades. He began his legal journey at the district court of Offenburg in nineteen seventy-eight after studying at the University of Freiburg and the University of Hamburg. His political involvement commenced in nineteen sixty-nine with the Junge Union, the youth wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and CSU.

Schäuble's ascent in politics was marked by his election to the Bundestag in nineteen seventy-two, representing the constituency of Offenburg. He became a prominent figure in German politics, serving as the minister for special affairs under Chancellor Helmut Kohl in nineteen eighty-four. His pivotal role in the reunification negotiations of Germany as the minister of the interior in nineteen eighty-nine solidified his reputation as a leading politician, despite facing criticism for his stringent law and order policies.

After a brief tenure as chairman of the CDU, which ended amid the CDU donations scandal in nineteen ninety-nine, Schäuble returned to the cabinet in two thousand five as minister of the interior and later served as minister of finance from two thousand nine for nearly eight years. His tenure was characterized by a firm stance during the eurozone crisis, advocating for austerity measures and achieving a budget that allowed Germany to take on no new debt for the first time since nineteen sixty-nine, a policy known as Black Zero.

In September two thousand seventeen, Schäuble was nominated as the president of the Bundestag, a position he held until the CDU/CSU's defeat in the two thousand twenty-one federal election.
