Wong Kar-wai

Originally from Shanghai, Wong emigrated to Hong Kong as a child. He began his career as a screenwriter for soap operas before making his directorial debut with the crime drama As Tears Go By in nineteen eighty-eight. While the film achieved moderate success, Wong soon shifted away from the prevalent crime and action genres to explore more personal themes in his filmmaking. His first foray into this new direction, Days of Being Wild, released in nineteen ninety, did not fare well at the box office but garnered critical acclaim, winning Best Film and Best Director at the 1991 Hong Kong Film Awards.

After the mixed reception of Ashes of Time in nineteen ninety-four, Wong sought to rejuvenate his passion for cinema with Chungking Express, a smaller project that emerged during a two-month sabbatical. This film, with its lighter tone, propelled Wong to international fame and earned him Best Film and Best Director at the 1995 Hong Kong Film Awards. He continued to solidify his reputation with the crime thriller Fallen Angels in nineteen ninety-five, which, despite its initial lukewarm reception, has since become a cult classic representative of Wong's distinctive style.

Wong's global acclaim reached new heights with the 1997 drama Happy Together, for which he won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent work, In the Mood for Love, released in two thousand, is revered for its lush visuals and subtle storytelling, further establishing Wong's trademark filmmaking style. Among his notable films are 2046, released in two thousand four, and The Grandmaster in two thousand thirteen, both of which received numerous awards and nominations worldwide.
