Woody Johnson, born on April 12, 1947, is a prominent American entrepreneur and businessperson, best known as the owner and chairman of the NFL's New York Jets. He is also recognized for his role as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2021 during Donald Trump's first term. As a great-grandson of Robert Wood Johnson I, he is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune.
In 2000, Johnson made headlines when he purchased the New York Jets for six hundred thirty-five million dollars, alongside his younger brother, Christopher Johnson. A long-time supporter of the Republican Party, he played a significant role in Donald Trump's presidential campaign in 2016, which led to his appointment as ambassador.
During his tenure in the UK, Johnson witnessed significant events, including Britain's exit from the EU and the relocation of the United States embassy in London. His brother Christopher took over the operational responsibilities of the Jets while he served as ambassador.
Upon returning to New York in 2021, Johnson resumed his position as chairman of the Jets. In 2023, he was instrumental in pursuing Aaron Rodgers, culminating in a trade with the Green Bay Packers. Additionally, in 2022, he made a two billion pound bid for Chelsea but later withdrew from the bidding process. In July 2025, he expanded his sports portfolio by acquiring a forty-three percent stake in Crystal Palace from Eagle Football Holdings, becoming a partner and director of the club.
