Wray Downes

In nineteen fifty-two, while studying at the Paris Conservatoire, Downes embraced jazz, collaborating with legendary musicians such as Sidney Bechet and Bill Coleman. His time in France marked a significant turning point in his career, allowing him to explore the vibrant jazz scene.

Upon returning to Canada in the mid-fifties, Downes became a prominent figure in the Toronto jazz community. He played alongside jazz greats like Oscar Peterson and served as a recurring house pianist at the Town Tavern, where he shared the stage with notable artists including Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, and Lester Young.
