Wu Peifu

Wu Peifu, born on April 22, 1878, was a prominent Chinese warlord and a significant figure during the tumultuous Warlord Era in China, which spanned from 1916 to 1927. Following the death of Yuan Shikai in 1916, Wu emerged as a key player within the Beiyang Army, aligning himself with the Zhili clique. His military prowess earned him the moniker 'Jade Marshal,' a testament to his strategic brilliance in various military conflicts.

Despite his military successes, Wu's political alliances were often fraught with instability. His reputation took a hit in 1923 when he violently suppressed a workers' strike, an action that marred his legacy. As the political landscape shifted, Wu faced significant challenges from the National Revolutionary Army during the Northern Expedition in 1927, ultimately leading to his retreat from the political arena.

In his later years, Wu Peifu took a firm stance against cooperation with the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War, reflecting his complex and often contradictory political beliefs.
