The group consists of influential members including RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, who was part of the collective until his passing in 2004. Cappadonna, a close affiliate, later joined as an official member, further solidifying the group's legacy.
In 1992, Wu-Tang Clan signed with Steve Rifkind's Loud Records, leading to the release of their groundbreaking debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in 1993. Initially met with positive reviews, the album has since achieved critical acclaim and is celebrated as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever produced. Between 1994 and 1996, the members pursued solo projects, showcasing their individual talents.
Their second album, Wu-Tang Forever, released in 1997, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and earned a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Subsequent albums, including The W (2000), Iron Flag (2001), 8 Diagrams (2007), and A Better Tomorrow (2014), received varying levels of popularity. Notably, their seventh album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, was sold for two million dollars, making it the most expensive piece of music ever sold.
In 2026, Wu-Tang Clan received a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, further cementing their status in music history. The collective has also played a pivotal role in launching the careers of numerous affiliated artists and groups, collectively known as the Wu-Tang Killa Bees, contributing to the revitalization of East Coast hip hop.
