Xavier Cugat was a prominent American musician and bandleader, renowned for his pivotal role in popularizing Latin music across the United States. Born in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, he spent his early years in Havana, Cuba, before making his way to New York City in nineteen fifteen. His background as a trained violinist and arranger laid the foundation for a remarkable career that would span several decades.

From nineteen thirty-three to nineteen forty-nine, Cugat led the resident orchestra at the prestigious Waldorf–Astoria hotel, where his vibrant performances captivated audiences. His prolific output as a recording artist over a remarkable forty-year period earned him the affectionate title of the 'Rumba King.' Cugat's influence extended beyond music; he was also a restaurateur in West Hollywood and New York, further showcasing his multifaceted talents.
