Xenocrates

Xenocrates of Chalcedon was a prominent Greek philosopher, mathematician, and the esteemed leader of the Platonic Academy from three hundred thirty-nine to three hundred fourteen BC. His intellectual journey was deeply influenced by the teachings of Plato, which he sought to refine and articulate with a mathematical lens.

In his philosophical explorations, Xenocrates distinguished three forms of being: the sensible, the intelligible, and a third that is a synthesis of the two. These correspond to the realms of sense, intellect, and opinion, respectively. He posited that unity and duality are divine forces governing the universe, while the soul is conceptualized as a self-moving number.

Xenocrates' metaphysical framework included the belief that God permeates all existence, alongside the existence of daemonical powers that serve as intermediaries between the divine and mortal realms, reflecting various conditions of the soul. Unlike Plato, he asserted that mathematical objects and Platonic Ideas are one and the same, emphasizing a more unified understanding of these concepts.

In the realm of ethics, Xenocrates taught that virtue is the true source of happiness, although he acknowledged that external goods can assist in achieving this state and fulfilling its purpose. His teachings continue to resonate, highlighting the intricate relationship between mathematics, philosophy, and ethics.
