Xiahou Yuan, born in the year two hundred, was a prominent military officer and politician during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Serving under the influential warlord Cao Cao, he played a crucial role in the military campaigns of the era, particularly in the western regions of China.
His military exploits in the 210s are notable, as he successfully defeated rival warlords Ma Chao and Han Sui in Liang Province, which encompasses parts of present-day Gansu, Ningxia, and Shaanxi provinces. Through his strategic prowess, he managed to subdue several tribal groups, including the Di and Qiang peoples, thereby solidifying Cao Cao's power in the region.
Tragically, Xiahou Yuan's life came to an end around February of two hundred nineteen during the Battle of Mount Dingjun. He was defending the Hanzhong Commandery against the forces of Liu Bei, a rival warlord. His death was later immortalized in the 14th-century historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where it is depicted that he was slain by Huang Zhong, a general under Liu Bei, during a surprise attack.
