Xiuhtezcatl Martinez

Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martinez, known as X, is a prominent American environmental activist and hip hop artist born on May 9, 2000. He has made significant contributions to the environmental movement, particularly as the Youth Director of Earth Guardians until 2019. His passion for activism is evident in his powerful speeches and advocacy for climate action.

Martinez gained international recognition after delivering a compelling speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, where he addressed the urgent need to combat climate change in English, Spanish, and Nahuatl. His eloquence and dedication to the cause have inspired many young activists around the world.

In addition to his activism, Martinez was one of twenty-one plaintiffs in the landmark lawsuit Juliana v. United States, filed in 2015 against the U.S. government for its inaction on climate change. Although the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit dismissed the case in May 2024, his involvement highlights the ongoing struggle for environmental justice.

Martinez also participated in the Martinez v. Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission case, a state-level lawsuit initiated in 2013. Unfortunately, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled against the plaintiffs in January 2019. Despite these setbacks, Xiuhtezcatl continues to be a vocal advocate for the planet, using his platform to raise awareness and inspire change.
