Xu Da

Xu Da, born in the year one thousand three hundred thirty-two, emerged as a pivotal figure during the transition from the Yuan to the Ming dynasty. Known by his courtesy name Tiande, he held the esteemed title of Duke of Wei and was later posthumously honored as Prince of Zhongshan. His legacy is deeply intertwined with that of the Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming dynasty, as he played a crucial role in the overthrow of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty.

A skilled military general and astute politician, Xu Da was recognized for his cautious approach and exceptional governance of the army. His contributions were instrumental in the establishment of the Ming dynasty and the reclamation of Chinese territories. The Hongwu Emperor himself praised Xu Da, referring to him as 'the Great Wall' of the Ming, a testament to his enduring strength and influence.

Beyond his military prowess, Xu Da's familial connections further solidified his importance in Chinese history. He was the father of Empress Xu, the father-in-law of the Yongle Emperor, and the maternal grandfather of the Hongxi Emperor. Remarkably, all but two of the subsequent Ming and Southern Ming emperors were descended from him, highlighting his significant lineage.

Xu Da's legacy continued to be honored long after his death in one thousand three hundred eighty-five. He was ranked first in the Imperial Ancestral Temples and Portrait Temples of Meritorious Officials, a recognition of his invaluable contributions to the Ming dynasty and Chinese history.
