Xu Shen

Xu Shen, born in the year fifty-eight, was a distinguished figure of the Eastern Han dynasty, renowned for his contributions as a calligrapher, philologist, politician, and writer. His scholarly pursuits positioned him as a leading authority on the Five Classics, a collection of ancient Chinese texts that shaped the foundation of Chinese literature and philosophy.

Among his most significant achievements is the authorship of the 'Shuowen Jiezi,' the first comprehensive dictionary of Chinese characters. This groundbreaking work not only cataloged characters but also organized them by radical, a method that has influenced lexicography for centuries. Xu Shen's dedication to this project culminated in a first draft completed in one hundred CE, although he chose to wait until one hundred twenty-one CE to present it to Emperor An of Han through his son.
