Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy, born on December twenty-first, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Indian politician and the founding president of the YSR Congress Party. He represents the Pulivendula Assembly constituency in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and previously served as the seventeenth Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Jagan is the son of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a former Chief Minister, and Y. S. Vijayamma, and he has a sister, Y. S. Sharmila, who is the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee.
Jagan's political journey began with the Indian National Congress, where he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kadapa in two thousand nine. Following the tragic death of his father in a helicopter crash that same year, he embarked on an Odarpu Yatra, a tour aimed at consoling the bereaved across the state. This pivotal moment led him to establish the YSR Congress Party, named in honor of his father.
In May two thousand twelve, Jagan faced significant legal challenges when he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of embezzlement. Allegations included the accumulation of vast assets through illegal means during his father's tenure as Chief Minister. His judicial custody was extended multiple times, and the Supreme Court of India dismissed his bail petitions on several occasions. After enduring sixteen months in jail, he was released on September twenty-fourth, two thousand thirteen.
In the two thousand fourteen Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Jagan's party secured sixty-seven seats, positioning him as the Leader of the Opposition. His leadership proved effective in the subsequent two thousand nineteen elections, where the YSR Congress Party achieved a remarkable victory, winning one hundred fifty-one out of one hundred seventy-five assembly segments. However, the two thousand twenty-four elections saw a dramatic shift, with the TDP, in alliance with the BJP and JSP, winning one hundred sixty-four seats, leaving Jagan and his party with only eleven.
