Yahya Jammeh

Yahya Jammeh, born on May 25, 1965, in Kanilai, Gambia, is a notable figure in the country's political landscape. He served as the President of the Gambia from 1996 until 2017, following a military coup in July 1994 that he led to overthrow the elected government of Sir Dawda Jawara. Initially ruling by decree, Jammeh transitioned to an elected presidency in 1996, securing re-election in subsequent years, including 2001, 2006, and 2011, before losing to Adama Barrow in 2016.

Jammeh's tenure was marked by a significant shift towards authoritarianism, characterized by oppressive policies against anti-government journalists, LGBT+ individuals, and opposition parties. His foreign policy decisions, including the withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Nations in 2013 and the International Criminal Court in 2016, created tensions with neighboring Senegal and were later reversed by his successor. Despite his supporters claiming that his policies promoted self-sufficiency and anti-colonialism, his presidency was marred by serious human rights violations.

Accusations against Jammeh include murder, rape, and torture, as detailed in the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission's final report. Following his departure from power, he has lived in exile in Equatorial Guinea, with many countries freezing his assets due to allegations of embezzling millions of dollars from the Gambian treasury to support a lavish lifestyle.
