His career spans several decades, during which he has held key positions that shaped China's foreign relations. Yang's journey began in nineteen seventy-two when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a stint as a worker at the Shanghai City Pujiang Electric Meter Factory from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen seventy-two.

Throughout his career, Yang has served in various significant roles, including as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from two thousand seven to two thousand thirteen. He was also the State Councilor from two thousand thirteen to two thousand eighteen and the director of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Foreign Affairs Commission from two thousand thirteen until two thousand twenty-two. His tenure as Chinese Ambassador to the United States from two thousand to two thousand four further solidified his reputation on the global stage.

He studied international relations at Ealing College, the University of Bath, and the London School of Economics from nineteen seventy-three to nineteen seventy-five.
