Yasuji Miyazaki

Yasuji Miyazaki, born on October 15, 1916, in Kosai, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, emerged as a remarkable talent in the world of swimming. At just fifteen years old, he made history by being selected for the Japanese Olympic team for the 1932 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, making him one of the youngest competitors in the event.

During the semi-finals of the 100 m freestyle, Miyazaki showcased his extraordinary skills by surpassing the Olympic record previously held by the legendary American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, clocking an impressive time of fifty-eight point two seconds. His performance earned him a gold medal, marking a significant milestone in his young career.

The following day, Miyazaki continued to shine as part of the Japanese team in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. Together, they not only secured a second gold medal but also set a new world record with a time of eight minutes fifty-eight point four seconds, further solidifying his status as a swimming prodigy.

After his triumphant return to Japan, Yasuji Miyazaki transitioned from competitive sports to academia, enrolling at Keio University. His journey from a young Olympic champion to a dedicated student reflects the diverse paths athletes can take after their sporting careers.
