Yejong of Joseon

Yejong of Joseon, born Yi Hwang on January 23, 1450, was the eighth monarch of the Joseon dynasty in Korea. He was initially titled Grand Prince Haeyang and was the younger brother of Crown Prince Uigyeong. Yejong ascended to the throne in 1468 at the young age of nineteen, following the reign of his father, King Sejo.

Despite his royal status, Yejong's reign was marked by significant challenges, primarily due to his poor health. His physical ailments rendered him unable to govern effectively, and he passed away just a year after taking the throne, on January 9, 1470.

One of the most notable events during Yejong's brief reign was the trial and execution of General Nam I, a prominent military leader known for quelling Yi Si-ae's Rebellion. Jealousy from Yu Chagwang, who was aware of Yejong's disfavor towards Nam I, led to accusations of treason against the general. This resulted in a trial that Yejong witnessed, ultimately leading to the execution of both Nam I and General Gang Sun, while Yu Chagwang was rewarded with a high office.

The political landscape during Yejong's reign was tumultuous, with Yu Chagwang's actions setting a precedent for further accusations against more esteemed ministers, highlighting the intrigue and danger present in the court of Joseon.
