Yekuno Amlak

Yekuno Amlak, born in the year 1300, emerged as a pivotal figure in Ethiopian history. He is celebrated as the Emperor of Ethiopia, reigning from 1270 to 1285. His ascension marked the beginning of the illustrious Solomonic dynasty, a lineage that would endure until 1974.

Originating from Bete Amhara, an area that corresponds to parts of modern-day Wollo and northern Shewa, Yekuno Amlak's rise to power was catalyzed by the defeat of the last Zagwe king. This victory not only solidified his position but also laid the groundwork for a new era in Ethiopian governance.
