Yennenga

Yennenga, a legendary figure of the twelfth century, is revered as the mother of the Mossi people in Burkina Faso. Her story, while steeped in myth, is believed to contain elements of truth that reflect her remarkable life as a military leader and ruler.

Born into the royal family of the Kingdom of Dagbon, now part of modern-day Ghana, Yennenga was the daughter of King Nedega, the kingdom's founder. Her father, however, forbade her from marrying, which ultimately led her to flee the kingdom. Disguised as a man, she escaped on her beloved stallion, aided by one of the king's horsemen.

During her journey, Yennenga encountered a young hunter named Rialé. Their union resulted in the birth of a son, Ouedraogo, whose name translates to 'male horse'—a tribute to the steed that facilitated their meeting. Ouedraogo would later become a prominent figure in Burkina Faso, with his name symbolizing the legacy of his mother.

Yennenga's tale is not just one of adventure and defiance; it is also a foundational narrative for the Mossi Kingdoms, with both she and her son being credited as their founders. The variations in her story only add to the richness of her legend, ensuring that her legacy endures through generations.
