Yerofey Khabarov

Yerofey Pavlovich Khabarov-Svyatitsky, born in 1603, emerged as a prominent Russian entrepreneur and zemleprokhodets, renowned for his explorations of the Amur River region. His endeavors were pivotal in the early attempts to colonize this vast area for Russia, a region that would later become significant in the context of Russian-Manchu border conflicts.

A native of Veliky Ustyug in northern European Russia, Khabarov initially worked as a manager for the Stroganovs at the saltworks in Solvychegodsk. His adventurous spirit led him to embark on a journey from Tobolsk to Mangazeya in 1625, where he would later set out on an expedition that took him to the Kheta River in the eastern part of Taimyr.

Between 1630 and 1641, Khabarov's explorations continued as he navigated from Mangazeya back to Tobolsk. His most notable achievement during this period was the establishment of a farming settlement along the Lena River, complete with saltworks at the confluence of the Kuta and Kirenga Rivers. This settlement laid the groundwork for future generations, with his descendants still residing in Stavropol today.

Yerofey Khabarov's legacy endures in the namesake of the major Russian city of Khabarovsk and the small town and railway station Yerofey Pavlovich, located on the Trans-Siberian railroad in Amur Oblast. Additionally, the icebreaker Ledokol-5 was renamed Yerofey Khabarov in 1966, further commemorating his contributions to Russian exploration.
