Yevgeny Prigozhin

Yevgeny Prigozhin, born on June first, nineteen sixty-one, was a multifaceted figure in Russia, known for his roles as a restaurateur, entrepreneur, and mercenary leader. Often referred to as 'Putin's chef,' he gained notoriety for his catering businesses that served the Kremlin, establishing a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. His journey began in the Soviet Union, where he faced incarceration, but he later emerged as a powerful oligarch controlling a network of companies closely linked to Russia's Defense Ministry and the GRU.

In two thousand fourteen, Prigozhin reportedly founded the Wagner Group, a private military company that played a pivotal role in supporting Russian separatist forces in Ukraine. Funded by the Russian state, the Wagner Group was instrumental in Russia's military operations in Ukraine, Syria, and various African nations. His influence extended beyond military endeavors; in November two thousand twenty-two, he acknowledged his companies' involvement in interference with United States elections, and in February two thousand twenty-three, he confirmed his leadership of the Internet Research Agency, known for its online propaganda campaigns.

Despite his close ties to the Kremlin, Prigozhin was vocal in his criticism of the Russian Defense Ministry, accusing it of corruption and mismanagement during the war in Ukraine. This dissent culminated in a rebellion on June twenty-third, two thousand twenty-three, when he led Wagner forces to capture Rostov-on-Don and advance toward Moscow. The rebellion was short-lived, ending the following day when he agreed to relocate his forces to Belarus, resulting in the dropping of criminal charges against him.

Tragically, on August twenty-third, two thousand twenty-three, Prigozhin's life came to a sudden end when a business jet he was aboard crashed in Tver Oblast, north of Moscow, killing him and nine others. U.S. government sources suggested that the crash was likely caused by a bomb or sabotage, leading to widespread speculation about the circumstances surrounding his death.
