Yevgeny Shevchuk

Yevgeny Shevchuk, born on June 19, 1968, is a notable figure in the political landscape of Transnistria, having served as the second President of the region from 2011 to 2016. His political career began as a deputy to the Supreme Soviet of Transnistria in 2000, where he played a significant role in shaping the legislative framework of the region.

Before ascending to the presidency, Shevchuk held the position of speaker of the Pridnestrovian Supreme Soviet from 2005 to 2009. He was also the leader of the political party Obnovlenie until 2010, showcasing his influence in Transnistrian politics. An ethnic Ukrainian, Shevchuk holds citizenship in both Transnistria and Russia, reflecting the complex identity of the region.

In 2017, Shevchuk's political journey took a dramatic turn when he fled to Moldova amid criminal charges. His situation escalated, and in December 2018, he was sentenced in absentia to sixteen years in prison and fined approximately thirty-six million US dollars, marking a significant fall from grace for the former president.
