YNW Melly

Jamell Maurice Demons, known to the world as YNW Melly, is an American rapper and singer born on May 1, 1999. He gained significant recognition in 2018 with his hit single "Murder on My Mind," a trap anthem that delves into themes of homicidal ideation. This track not only marked his mainstream breakthrough but also led to a tumultuous period in his life, as he faced serious legal challenges following his arrest for the double murder of two fellow members of the YNW collective.

Following the success of "Murder on My Mind," which peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100, YNW Melly signed with 300 Entertainment. The label released his debut commercial mixtape, "I Am You," in 2018, which received positive reviews and commercial success. His follow-up mixtape, "We All Shine," released in 2019, featured the double platinum hit "Mixed Personalities" featuring Kanye West, and both projects earned gold certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Despite his legal troubles, YNW Melly continued to release music that resonated with fans. His first two studio albums, "Melly vs. Melvin" and "Just a Matter of Slime," were released in 2019 and 2021, respectively. While both albums achieved commercial success, they received mixed reviews from critics. The former included two Billboard Hot 100 top-forty singles, "223's" featuring 9lokkNine and a remix of "Suicidal" featuring Juice Wrld, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200.

In February 2019, YNW Melly was arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated murder, facing life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted. He has also been linked to the 2017 murder of a sheriff's deputy. After pleading not guilty, his first trial resulted in a hung jury, and as of January 2024, his retrial is on hold pending decisions regarding digital evidence, with a new trial date set for September 2025.
