Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Yohannes IV

Yohannes IV, born on July 11, 1837, was a prominent military leader who ascended to the throne as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1871, reigning until his death in 1889 at the Battle of Gallabat. Prior to his imperial rule, he served as the king of Tigray from 1869 to 1871, where he began to establish his legacy as a formidable leader.

During his reign, Yohannes IV successfully defended Ethiopia against a significant Egyptian invasion, showcasing his military prowess and strategic acumen. His earlier years were marked by rebellion against Tewodros II, and after rising to power in the 1860s, he continued Tewodros' policy of unification while also engaging with regional governors through extensive tours.

Yohannes IV played a crucial role in assisting the British during their expedition to Abyssinia, which ultimately led to Tewodros' suicide. In recognition of his support, he was rewarded with ammunition and artillery, further bolstering his military capabilities. He viewed Islam as a challenge to the stability of his state and actively worked to enhance the Christian presence in Ethiopia, reportedly converting five hundred fifty thousand Oromos and Jebertis to Christianity.

In terms of foreign relations, Yohannes IV faced conflicts with Isma'il Pasha of the Khedivate of Egypt and Muhammad Ahmad during the Mahdist War, reflecting the turbulent political landscape of the time. His reign was characterized by both military engagement and efforts to solidify Ethiopia's national identity.
