Yu Kilchun

Yu Kilchun, born on October twenty-fourth, eighteen fifty-six, was a prominent figure in Korean history, known for his multifaceted roles as an autobiographer, writer, journalist, politician, and poet. Living through the transformative years of the late Joseon and the Korean Empire, he was a pioneer in embracing foreign ideas and literature, a rarity for his time.

In eighteen eighty-three, Yu made history as one of the first Koreans to visit the United States. His educational journey took him to Japan, where he became the first Korean to study abroad, and later to the United States. His literary contributions included some of the earliest books and translations on Western topics in contemporary Korean, which played a significant role in the reform movement within the Korean Empire.

As an early independence activist, Yu advocated for modernization within the Korean government, proposing the establishment of a constitutional monarchy and greater public participation. His reformist ideas put him at odds with the Korean monarchy, leading to his exile in Japan, where he attempted a coup against the monarchy that ultimately failed. Upon his return to Korea, he found the nation under Japanese influence, which plunged him into a deep depression.

Yu Kilchun's legacy is complex; he is often remembered as a chinilpa, or collaborator with Japan, particularly in the wake of the assassination of Empress Myeongseong, where he was labeled one of the Eulmi Four Traitors. His life story reflects the tumultuous changes in Korea during a pivotal era.
