As a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, he played a pivotal role in the Green Revolution during the nineteen seventies, earning him the esteemed title of the 'Father of Hybrid Rice.'
His innovative hybrid rice varieties have been cultivated in numerous countries across Africa, America, and Asia, significantly enhancing food security and providing a reliable food source in regions vulnerable to famine. This remarkable achievement allowed China to sustain twenty percent of the global population on merely nine percent of the world's arable land.
Yuan Longping's contributions to agriculture did not go unrecognized. In September two thousand nineteen, he was awarded the Medal of the Republic, the highest honor in the People's Republic of China. Additionally, he received the World Food Prize and the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in two thousand four, acknowledging his vital role in ensuring food security worldwide.
