Yuan Zhen

Yuan Zhen, born in the year seven hundred seventy-nine, was a prominent figure in the middle Tang dynasty, known for his multifaceted talents as a poet, writer, and calligrapher. His literary prowess is particularly highlighted in his renowned work, Yingying's Biography, which has inspired numerous adaptations in various artistic forms, including opera and music. Yuan Zhen's poetry is celebrated for its inclusion in popular anthologies and its exploration of exotic themes, reflecting his involvement in the 'New Yuefu' movement, where poets used their craft to subtly express dissent.

A native of Luoyang and a descendant of the Northern Wei imperial family, Yuan faced personal tragedy early in life, losing his father at the tender age of seven. He relocated to Fengxiang with his mother, Lady Zheng, where he began his literary journey at the age of fifteen. Yuan Zhen became a significant member of Bai Juyi's literary circle, contributing to the revival of ancient literature and forming deep friendships with notable figures, including the poet Xue Tao, who may have been more than just a friend.

In addition to his literary achievements, Yuan Zhen briefly served as chancellor during Emperor Muzong's reign, showcasing his political acumen. He and Bai Juyi shared a vision of retreating as Taoist recluses once they had amassed sufficient wealth, a dream tragically unfulfilled due to Yuan's premature death. His legacy includes a poignant grave inscription for the esteemed poet Du Fu, marking one of the earliest acknowledgments of Du Fu's literary contributions.
