Yun Ch'iho

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Yun Ch'iho

Yun Ch'iho, born on December twenty-sixth, eighteen sixty-four, emerged from a distinguished aristocratic family in Korea. His father, General Yun Ung-nyeol, held a ministerial position in the Joseon government, which afforded Yun the unique opportunity to pursue education abroad. He studied in China, Japan, and the United States, where he attended both Vanderbilt University and Emory University.

During the late Joseon and Korean Empire periods, Yun became a significant political figure, actively participating in various reformist organizations such as the Independence Club, the People's Joint Association, and the New People's Association. His early career was marked by a strong sense of nationalism, and he held several government positions while also being a dedicated Methodist Christian and an early leader of the Korean YMCA.

However, as Japan's influence over Korea intensified, culminating in the colonization of Korea in nineteen ten, Yun's political stance shifted. He began to support the Japanese cause, distancing himself from the Korean independence movement, including the March First Movement. This change in allegiance led to his controversial legacy, with many contemporary Koreans viewing him as a collaborator, or 'chinilpa.'
