Yuri Orlov

Yuri Orlov, born on August thirteenth, nineteen twenty-four, is renowned not only for his contributions to nuclear physics but also for his unwavering commitment to human rights. As a particle accelerator physicist, he made significant strides in the field while simultaneously advocating for the rights of individuals in the Soviet Union.

Orlov's activism led him to become a prominent Soviet dissident and a founding member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, which aimed to monitor the implementation of the Helsinki human rights accords. His dedication to this cause resulted in his imprisonment for nine years, during which he was declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, highlighting the severe repercussions faced by those who dared to challenge the regime.
