During his time at CSKA Moscow, Zhirkov enjoyed considerable domestic and European success, which paved the way for his transfer to Chelsea in 2009 for a substantial fee of eighteen million pounds. His tenure in the English Premier League lasted two seasons before he returned to Russia, joining Anzhi Makhachkala, and later moving to Dynamo Moscow in 2013. In January 2016, he signed with Zenit, further solidifying his status in Russian football.

Zhirkov's international career has been equally impressive, earning over one hundred caps for the Russian national team since 2005.
