Yusuf Saad Kamel

Yusuf Saad Kamel, born on March 29, 1983, in Narok, Kenya, is a distinguished former middle-distance runner known for his prowess in the 800 metres and 1500 metres events. He is the son of the celebrated two-time 800 metres World Champion, Billy Konchellah, and represented Bahrain on the international stage.

In 2009, Kamel achieved remarkable success at the World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin, where he clinched the gold medal in the 1500 m and a bronze in the 800 m. However, his career faced challenges when he ceased competing for Bahrain due to issues surrounding unpaid salary and bonuses. His desire to represent Kenya was hindered as Bahraini officials retained his Kenyan passport, leaving him unable to participate in competitions.

Despite these setbacks, Kamel made a return to the track in July 2009 at the Athletissima meeting, still competing under the Bahraini flag. His attempts to switch allegiance to Kenya were met with resistance from Athletics Kenya, which ultimately ceased to support his efforts.

At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, Kamel participated solely in the 1500 m event but narrowly missed qualifying for the final. Throughout his career, he trained with PACE Sports Management under the guidance of Ricky Simms, honing his skills as a formidable athlete.
