Yuzuru Hanyu, born on December 7, 1994, is a celebrated Japanese figure skater and ice show producer, widely recognized as one of the greatest in the sport's history. He began his skating journey at the tender age of four and competed in men's singles from 2004 until 2022. Hanyu made history by becoming the first men's single skater in sixty-six years to win back-to-back Olympic titles in 2014 and 2018, and he holds the distinction of being the first Asian Olympic champion in this discipline.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hanyu has amassed numerous accolades, including two World Championships in 2014 and 2017, and six Japanese national championships from 2012 to 2015 and 2020 to 2021. He is the only singles skater to have won four consecutive Grand Prix Finals from 2013 to 2016. His remarkable achievement at the 2020 Four Continents Championships made him the first skater in men's singles to complete the Super Slam, winning all major international junior and senior titles.
In addition to his competitive success, Hanyu has broken world records nineteen times, the most in singles since the ISU Judging System was introduced in 2003. He was also the first skater to successfully land a quadruple loop jump in international competition. His transition to the professional level in 2022 marked a significant shift in the figure skating landscape, with his ongoing Yuzuru Hanyu Ice Story series showcasing his innovative approach to performance art.
Hanyu's first major work as a professional, the Yuzuru Hanyu Ice Story series, includes the groundbreaking Prologue event in 2022 and the Repray Tour from 2023 to 2024. His second solo show, Gift, held at the Tokyo Dome, set a record for the largest ice show audience, attracting thirty-five thousand spectators. By February 2024, his Ice Story series had drawn over one hundred thousand attendees, blending live skating with profound narratives.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Hanyu's life was profoundly impacted by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which led him to engage in various charitable efforts, including donating more than three million dollars for reconstruction and humanitarian initiatives.
