Yves Beauchemin

Yves Beauchemin, a distinguished Québécois novelist, was born on June twenty-sixth, nineteen forty-one, in Rouyn-Noranda. He spent his formative years in the village of Clova and pursued higher education at the Université de Montréal, where he earned a degree in French literature and art history in nineteen sixty-five. His career began in academia, teaching literature at Collège Garneau and Université Laval, before transitioning to the publishing industry as an editor in Montreal.

Beauchemin's literary journey took a significant turn in nineteen sixty-nine when he joined Radio-Québec as a researcher. His debut novel, L'enfirouapé, published in nineteen seventy-four, garnered the Prix France-Québec, marking the start of a prolific writing career. His second novel, Le Matou, released in nineteen eighty-one, achieved remarkable success, becoming the best-selling novel in French Quebec literature and earning translations into seventeen languages. This work also won the Prix de la ville de Montreal and the Prix du livre de l'ete Cannes in nineteen eighty-two.

In his narratives, Beauchemin is recognized as a detached yet compassionate observer of contemporary life, drawing inspiration from the great nineteenth-century authors such as Balzac, Dickens, Dostoevsky, and Gogol. His third novel, Juliette Pormerleau, published in nineteen eighty-nine, earned him the Prix Jean Giono, further solidifying his reputation as a significant voice in literature.

In recognition of his contributions to literature, Yves Beauchemin was appointed Officier de l'Ordre national du Québec on October twenty-eighth, two thousand three. He continued to write, with his novel Les Empouchers released in two thousand six and his latest work, Une nuit de tempête, published in two thousand twenty-three. Seven of his books have been translated into English, including The Alley Cat and Juliette, showcasing his international appeal. Currently, he resides in Longueuil, Quebec.
