Yvon Dumont

W. Yvon Dumont, born on January 21, 1951, in St. Laurent, Manitoba, is a distinguished politician and a prominent figure in the Métis community. His political journey began in 1967 when he became involved with the Manitoba Metis Federation, eventually rising to the position of Executive Vice-President in 1973 and serving as President from 1984 to 1993. His leadership was pivotal during a time of significant change and recognition for Métis rights and identity.

In 1993, Dumont made history by becoming the first member of Manitoba's Métis community to be appointed as the province's Lieutenant Governor, marking a significant milestone in the representation of Indigenous peoples in Canadian governance. His appointment coincided with a national reappraisal of Métis leader Louis Riel, reflecting a shift in public perception towards Riel's contributions to the province's formation.
