He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the House of Commons, representing the Acadie—Bathurst riding from nineteen ninety-seven until his retirement in two thousand fifteen.
Before entering politics, Godin was a dedicated labour representative for the United Steelworkers, where he advocated for workers' rights and fair labor practices. His commitment to these causes laid a strong foundation for his political career.
During his final term in parliament, Godin took on the role of NDP critic for Labour and Official Languages, where he continued to champion the interests of workers and promote bilingualism in Canada. In two thousand three, he notably supported Bill Blaikie's campaign to lead the NDP, demonstrating his active involvement in shaping the party's direction.
