He is notably the only Pakistani to have presided over the International Court of Justice, a role he held from nineteen seventy until nineteen seventy-three. Additionally, he served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly, making him the only individual to have held both prestigious positions.

In August nineteen forty-seven, he relocated to Karachi and became a member of Pakistan's inaugural cabinet under the Liaquat administration. His diplomatic career flourished as he represented Pakistan at the United Nations, where he fought for Palestinian interests, earning him respect among Arab nations. In nineteen sixty-three, he assumed the presidency of the UN General Assembly in a de facto capacity for the State of Palestine.

After leaving the UN in nineteen sixty-four, he returned to the International Court of Justice, where he served as vice president until nineteen fifty-eight.
