Zahra Kazemi

Zahra Kazemi, born in nineteen forty-eight, was an Iranian-Canadian freelance photojournalist whose work brought her both acclaim and tragedy. Known for her fearless reporting, she captured the essence of her subjects through her lens, shedding light on the often-overlooked stories of the oppressed.

Her life took a harrowing turn when she was arrested in Iran, where she faced unimaginable circumstances at the hands of Iranian authorities. Kazemi was held in Evin Prison, a notorious facility in Tehran, where she ultimately lost her life. The autopsy revealed a grim reality: she had been subjected to rape and torture, with evidence of severe physical trauma.

Despite Iranian officials claiming her death was accidental, the truth emerged through the testimony of Shahram Azam, a former military physician. He reported clear signs of torture on her body, including fractures and bruising, which contradicted the official narrative. This tragic event marked a pivotal moment, drawing international attention to human rights abuses in Iran.

In recognition of her courage and commitment to freedom of expression, Kazemi was posthumously honored with the Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression in November two thousand three. Her legacy continues to inspire those who fight for justice and the rights of journalists worldwide.
