Zalmay Khalilzad

Zalmay Khalilzad, born on March 22, 1951, is a prominent American diplomat and foreign policy expert known for his significant contributions to U.S. foreign relations. Raised in Kabul, Afghanistan, he moved to the United States as a high school exchange student, eventually earning a doctorate from the University of Chicago. His career in diplomacy began during the Reagan Administration, where he played a crucial role in shaping the U.S. response to the Soviet–Afghan War.

Throughout his career, Khalilzad has held several key positions, including serving as the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan from two thousand four to two thousand five and as ambassador to Iraq from two thousand five to two thousand seven. He also held the prestigious role of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from two thousand seven to two thousand nine. His expertise in international relations led him to become a counselor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and to lead Gryphon Partners and Khalilzad Associates, a consulting firm based in Washington, D.C.

In two thousand eighteen, Khalilzad was appointed by President Donald Trump as the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, a role he maintained under President Joe Biden until October eighteen, two thousand twenty-one. During this time, he was instrumental in brokering the U.S.–Taliban deal and facilitating the final withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. His diplomatic efforts have been pivotal in shaping the future of U.S.-Afghan relations.

Despite being rumored as a potential candidate for the Afghan presidential election in two thousand fourteen, Khalilzad ultimately chose not to run. His name was also considered for the position of Secretary of State in two thousand seventeen, reflecting his standing as a respected figure in U.S. foreign policy.
