Kaloev began his professional journey with Spartaki Tbilisi from nineteen fifty to nineteen fifty-one, before moving to Dinamo Tbilisi, where he played from nineteen fifty-three to nineteen fifty-six and again from nineteen fifty-nine to nineteen sixty-four. He also had a stint with Lokomotiv Moscow between nineteen fifty-seven and nineteen fifty-eight.

One of the highlights of his career was participating in the inaugural European Nations' Cup in nineteen sixty, where he contributed to the Soviet team's triumph as champions. Additionally, he represented the Soviet Union at the Olympic level, playing in three matches.

Renowned for his remarkable heading ability, Kaloev was often regarded as one of the finest headers of his time. His teammate and friend, Mikhail Meskhi, famously remarked that to score a goal, he needed to ensure his cross found Kaloev's head, as it was almost guaranteed to result in a goal.
