Chára's international career is equally remarkable, representing the Slovakia men's national team and earning two silver medals at the Ice Hockey World Championships. He also contributed to Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where they secured a silver medal. His contributions to the sport were recognized in 2025 when he was inducted into both the IIHF Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

During his tenure with the Boston Bruins, Chára served as captain for fourteen seasons, from 2006 to 2020.
