Zdeno Chára

Zdeno Chára, born on March 18, 1977, is a distinguished Slovak former professional ice hockey player renowned for his towering presence on the ice. Standing at an impressive six feet nine inches, he holds the record as the tallest player in NHL history. Over the course of twenty-four seasons, Chára showcased his skills as a defenceman for several teams, including the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, and Washington Capitals, from 1997 to 2022.

Chára's international career is equally remarkable, representing the Slovakia men's national team and earning two silver medals at the Ice Hockey World Championships. He also contributed to Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where they secured a silver medal. His contributions to the sport were recognized in 2025 when he was inducted into both the IIHF Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

During his tenure with the Boston Bruins, Chára served as captain for fourteen seasons, from 2006 to 2020. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, 2013, and 2019, culminating in a championship victory in 2011. Notably, he became the first Slovak player to win the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenceman in 2009, further solidifying his legacy in the sport.

In 2022, Chára achieved a significant milestone by playing in his one thousand six hundred fifty-second NHL game, making him the all-time leader in games played by a defenceman. His remarkable career also places him among the elite group of European-born captains who have led their teams to the Stanley Cup championship, being the first from the Eastern Bloc to do so.
