Zhang Juzheng, born in 1525, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Ming dynasty, serving as a grand secretary during the reigns of emperors Longqing and Wanli. His journey in public service began in 1547 when he excelled in the highest level of official examinations, earning the prestigious rank of jinshi. Following this achievement, he contributed his expertise at the Hanlin Academy, where he honed his skills in governance and administration.

In 1567, Zhang was appointed grand secretary by the Longqing Emperor, and with the ascension of the Wanli Emperor in 1572, he ascended to the role of head of the grand secretaries. During the early years of the Wanli Emperor's reign, Zhang became a crucial mentor to the young ruler, effectively acting as the de facto leader of China due to the Emperor's immaturity.
