Zhou Yu

Zhou Yu, born in the year one hundred seventy-five, was a prominent Chinese military strategist and general during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Known by his courtesy name Gongjin, he served under the influential warlords Sun Ce and Sun Quan, playing a pivotal role in the tumultuous power struggles of his time.

His most notable achievements include leading the forces of Sun Quan to victory against the formidable northern warlord Cao Cao at the legendary Battle of Red Cliffs in late two hundred eight. This decisive battle, along with his subsequent triumph at the Battle of Jiangling in two hundred nine, solidified Zhou Yu's reputation as a brilliant military tactician and laid the groundwork for the establishment of Eastern Wu in two hundred twenty-two.

Tragically, Zhou Yu's life was cut short at the age of thirty-five in two hundred ten, as he was preparing for an invasion of Yi Province. His untimely death meant he did not witness the enthronement of Sun Quan, a regime that he had significantly contributed to shaping.

In the fourteenth-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhou Yu's character is depicted as a complex figure—brilliant and charismatic yet plagued by insecurities, particularly in his rivalry with the renowned strategist Zhuge Liang. This portrayal has greatly influenced his legacy and popular image throughout history.
