Ziyad al-Nakhalah, born on April sixth, nineteen fifty-three in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip, is a prominent Palestinian politician and the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). His early life was marked by tragedy, as his father was killed during the 1956 Khan Yunis massacre. Al-Nakhalah completed his primary and secondary education in Khan Yunis and Gaza City before earning a teaching diploma from the Teachers' Institute in Gaza.
In nineteen seventy-one, al-Nakhalah was sentenced to life imprisonment in Israel due to his political activities. However, he was released in a prisoner swap in nineteen eighty-five, after which he played a crucial role in establishing the PIJ's military wing, the Al-Quds Brigades, in the Gaza Strip. His activism continued, leading to his detention by Israeli authorities in April nineteen eighty-eight during the First Intifada, after which he was exiled to Lebanon alongside other PIJ leaders.
Al-Nakhalah's political career progressed as he became the deputy secretary general of the PIJ in nineteen ninety-five. His leadership capabilities were recognized when he was elected as the secretary general of the PIJ in two thousand eighteen. His influence in the organization has been significant, especially as the PIJ has been designated a terrorist organization by several countries since September twenty-eight, two thousand eighteen.
On January twenty-third, two thousand fourteen, the United States listed Nakhalah as a Specially Designated Terrorist, resulting in the freezing of his property and interests within the United States. His life and career continue to be intertwined with the complex political landscape of the region.
