Zlatko Lagumdžija

Zlatko Lagumdžija, born on December twenty-sixth, nineteen fifty-five, in Sarajevo, is a prominent Bosnian politician and diplomat. He currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, a position he has held since July twenty-twenty-three. His political journey began during the Bosnian War, where he served as deputy Prime Minister, closely advising then-president Alija Izetbegović and participating in crucial peace negotiations.

Lagumdžija's political career saw significant milestones, including his tenure as Chairman of the Council of Ministers from two thousand one to two thousand two, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs during two separate terms, from two thousand one to two thousand two and again from two thousand twelve to two thousand fifteen. He was also the president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP BiH) from nineteen ninety-seven until two thousand fourteen, playing a vital role in shaping the political landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Educated at the University of Sarajevo, where he graduated in nineteen eighty-one, Lagumdžija furthered his studies with postdoctoral research at the University of Arizona. His academic career included teaching at the University of Sarajevo and leading the management information systems department at the Economics Faculty. His expertise in economics and business informatics has complemented his political endeavors.

In the two thousand parliamentary elections, Lagumdžija's SDP BiH formed a coalition that successfully ousted nationalist parties from power. His leadership facilitated the passage of the Election Law, paving the way for Bosnia and Herzegovina's accession to the Council of Europe. However, after the two thousand two elections, the nationalist parties regained control, leading Lagumdžija to serve as a member of the national House of Representatives.

Despite facing challenges, including a poor showing in the two thousand fourteen elections that led to his resignation as party leader, Lagumdžija remained influential in Bosnian politics. In two thousand nineteen, he was removed from the SDP BiH due to his involvement in a new political organization. He is also a member of the Club of Madrid, an organization dedicated to promoting democracy and change globally.
