Zoe Porphyrogenita

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Zoe Porphyrogenita

Zoe Porphyrogenita, born in the year nine hundred seventy-eight, was a prominent figure of the Macedonian dynasty and briefly held the title of Byzantine empress in the year one thousand forty-two, alongside her sister Theodora. Her early life was marked by a failed engagement to Holy Roman Emperor Otto III in nine hundred ninety-six, after which she spent many years within the imperial palace.

Following the death of her uncle Basil II in one thousand twenty-five, Zoe's father, Constantine VIII, ascended to the Byzantine throne. With no male heirs, he sought to secure the dynasty through marriage, leading to Zoe's union with Romanos Argyros when she was fifty years old. Their reign began immediately after her father's death, but it was marred by turmoil.

Romanos III's mysterious death in one thousand thirty-four raised suspicions, with allegations pointing towards Zoe and her lover, Michael. Shortly after, Zoe married Michael, who was crowned Emperor Michael IV. In one thousand forty-one, she adopted her dying husband's nephew, Michael Kalaphates, but was later exiled by Michael V, prompting a popular revolt that restored her and Theodora to power as joint empresses.

Despite a brief reign of two months, Zoe's influence persisted as she married a former lover, who became Constantine IX, while she continued to wield power as the Byzantine empress. Her reign, which lasted until her death at the age of seventy-two, witnessed significant challenges, including the decline of the Roman army and the initial incursions of the Turks into eastern Anatolia.
