Zofia Zamenhof

Zofia Zamenhof, born on December thirteenth, eighteen eighty-nine, was a remarkable Polish pediatrician and an ardent Esperantist. She was the daughter of Klara Silbernik and L. L. Zamenhof, the visionary behind the creation of the Esperanto language. Zofia's early life was steeped in a rich intellectual heritage, which undoubtedly influenced her future endeavors.

Her academic journey began at the University of Lausanne, where she pursued her medical studies from nineteen hundred six to nineteen hundred thirteen. After completing her education, she passed a state examination in Saint Petersburg in nineteen fourteen, marking the beginning of her professional career. Zofia specialized in internal and pediatric diseases, dedicating her skills to the health and well-being of children.

Throughout her career, Zofia worked at a hospital in Lebedyn and later in Warsaw from nineteen twenty-two. Her commitment to her patients was unwavering, even during the harrowing times of World War II. As the war escalated, she moved to the Warsaw Ghetto, where she continued her medical practice despite the looming threat of the Nazis.

Tragically, Zofia's life was cut short when she was arrested and transported to a death camp. In nineteen forty-two, she was taken from the Umschlagplatz in the Warsaw ghetto to the extermination camp in Treblinka, where she was murdered, most likely in a gas chamber. Today, her legacy is honored with a symbolic tomb, a commemorative plaque near the tomb of Klara Zamenhof, located in the Jewish Cemetery in Warsaw.
