Zofka Kveder

Zofka Kveder, born on April twenty-second, eighteen seventy-eight, in Ljubljana, was a pioneering writer, journalist, and editor. She spent her formative years in the serene landscapes of rural Lower Carniola before attending a convent school in Ljubljana. In eighteen ninety-seven, she began her professional journey in Ljubljana, which set the stage for her literary career.

In eighteen ninety-nine, Kveder relocated to Trieste and subsequently to Bern, where she enrolled in university. However, financial constraints led her to Munich and then Prague, where she met her future husband, Vladimir Jelovšek, a Croatian medical student. The couple moved to Zagreb in nineteen oh six, marking a significant chapter in her life. Kveder later remarried Croatian politician Juraj Demetrović.

Her literary debut came in Prague with the publication of her first book of short stories, titled 'Misterij žene' (The Mystery of a Woman). Kveder was instrumental in the establishment of the first women's publishing house in Slovenia, Založba Belo-modra knjižnica, which was led by the noted feminist and publisher Minka Krofta. An anthology of her work was published by this house, further solidifying her legacy.

In Slovene literature, Kveder is celebrated for her encouragement of emerging writers, including Prežihov Voranc and France Bevk, during her tenure as the editor of the Prague-published journal 'Domači prijatelj.' Additionally, she translated works by Janko Kersnik and Ivan Cankar into German, as well as Czech and Croatian plays into Slovene, showcasing her linguistic versatility and commitment to literature.
